The Alaskan Klee Kai is a little version of the Husky and has three size classifications -- Toy size (approx.13 inches tall); Miniature (up to 16 inches tall) and Standard (maximum 17 inches tall). On an average, Alaskan Klee Kais weigh 5-22lbs and are approximately 10-17 inches tall. The Alaskan Klee Kai is a breed of dog developed in the 70s and still relatively new. Their name roughly translates as “little dog” from the Eskimo language and they were meant to be a companion version of the bigger sled dogs of the north. However, most breeders are very careful, and for this reason, Alaskan Klee Kai is remarkably problem free medically speaking. Longer coated dogs may have some feathering on the rear of the front legs, the rear of the hindquarters, from the buttocks to the hock joint; underside of the body; and the ears. The undercoat is soft and dense and of sufficient length to support the outer coat. Not recommended for first-time dog owners due to their natural reserved/catious behavior around strangers, Alaskan Klee Kais will make good watch dogs. Because of there skittish personally, early on constant socialization is highly recommended. I’m saying that we can tell you more about the behavior of each individual dog and temperament that might be expected in an individual puppy. We can tell you the kind of situation which may cause a problem with your pups’ development. Begin by looking at the dog’s form and shape. Physically they should possess the wolf-like features of the Husky, with long front legs, curved rear haunches, a bushy downward pointing tail, straight back, and wide body.
To further develop the breed, Siberian and Alaskan Huskies were used along with Schipperke and American Eskimo dogs to make them smaller. The breed was not released to the public until 1988, and they were first recognized by a registry in 1995. That was when we knew we had to find a stud dog for our breeding program and we found Moses. We bought Moses from the Jim & Billie Henderson and he grew up to be an awesome male, as a puppy he was so laid back you could hold him upside down in your hand and rub his belly and he’d fall right to sleep, I think he still does that today, although he does not fit just in your hand.
