When I saw my first Argentine Mastiff, to tell you the truth, I was a little scared. They are a muscular breed, looking like a Pit Bull, yet at the same time had a gracefulness not seen in this lineage. When you pet these beautiful animals, their coat is smooth, the hair sleek and short. And the Argentine Dogo is white, with a smudging of ticking but the undercoat is very short. Got the picture? Imagine a short dog with a huge head and a jaw to match that looks as if it could rip through anything. The Argentine Dogo looks mean, docked ears and those piercing dark brown or hazel eyes which show attentiveness. Most Dogo’s have black noses.

They have broad chests. Look at these examples and you’ll see there is no loose skin on this dog. The tail of the Dogo is quite long, but breeders tell us that it should never wind over the back of the pup.

For a pet, the Dogo Argentino makes a great companion. It is very loyal and intelligent. The dog came from a hunting dogs originally bred for sniffing out wild pigs in the Argentine Outback. So remember this hunting desire is instinct in the Dogo even when kept as a house dog. Because they are so good with children, the Argentine Dogo is a great watch dog. They are very protective of their “family” and intelligent and trainable. This is an easy dog to house train. Use a little positive reinforcement and watch them thrive.

Early on, make sure you socialize your Dogo Argentino. They will be aggressive to other breeds otherwise. We found some to be aggressive to other animals, including humans. They will not start a fight, but will defend their territory. And breeders tell us they practically demand a lot of attention. Argentine Dogos want to be included in family outings and play time. They associate well with your friends and other pets, once they learn what is going on.

You’ll see the Argentine Dogo as a service dog and a hunting dog. What other dog can claim that sort of versatility? Pretty cool. Hats off to this wonderful breed. Do you have an Argentine Dogo or want one? Comment below and let us know!
