List of Small Dog Breeds – Plenty of Choice
Choosing a puppy from a list of small dog breeds can be easier if you make a selection between short hairs and long hairs. The shorthaired dogs are a lot easier to brush and groom and are the preferred dog for those without much time to do these things. Chihuahuas are good dogs because they can be shorthaired or longhaired. They are really small and along with the English Toy Spaniel, Papillon, Toy Fox Terrier, and Toy Poodle, are part of the toy group on any list of small dog breeds.
Some others on the list of small dog breeds are popularly known as lap dogs. These dogs often enjoy sitting on the laps of their owners and being petted or groomed all the time. Basically the Paris Hilton of dogs...Now this doesn't mean that large breeds don't sit in their owners laps! Pomeranians, Pekingese, Maltese, Lhasa Apsos, Miniature Pinschers, also known as Minpins, are some popular lap dogs. The Papillon, Lhasa Apso, Silky Terrier and Pekingese, are some of the better known longhaired dogs.
Characteristics of Some Dogs on the List of Small Dog Breeds
Small dogs are usually spunky little guys; they are not so good with smaller children though. There are some small breeds who are lap dogs other like to roam around outside. Sometimes it can be hard to choose with breed from a list of small dog breeds to bring home, most of them are so easy to fall in love with!
The King Charles Spaniel is a good example of a very friendly dog that gets along with other people's pets. Chihuahuas usually have the notion in their heads that they are ten times their regular size. The Papillon or Continental Toy Spaniel is amongst the gentlest and most affectionate of dogs. It is fond of outdoor exercise and is quite a tough dog.
Pekingese can rule the house and is the perfect lapdog. Pomeranians are generally smart and make for a good friend. Some people think they are more cat-like by temperament. Pugs and Fox Terriers are both ideal to have with children around. They enjoy company and are very energetic and playful. At the end of their play they love to curl up in the lap!
