Yorkshire Terriers are quick to determine where they fit in a household’s “pack.” Often aloof and untrusting of strangers, Yorkies are more family-oriented dogs and share this trait with their cousins: the Biewer Yorkie. Some Yorkies however, may be very friendly and outgoing towards strangers, so this does vary. Puppy Yorkshire Terriers are born black and tan and gradually attain their natural color. The original Yorkshire Terrier, known as the “Broken-Haired Scotch Terrier” was a 12-to-14 pound dog with wire hair whose intended purpose was the catching of rats and other vermin that lived in small spaces. They are recommended for older, considerate children, simply because they are so small, most people allow them to get away with behaviors no dog should display . Dogs of this breed should be compact with square proportions and a perfectly straight top line. They should stand on solid, straight legs, and the head should be carried high. Additionally, since Yorkies carry less dander on their coat, they generally do not have the unpleasant “wet dog” odor when wet, and they may not affect as many people who suffer from dog-related allergies.
