The American Water Spaniel is a active, muscular dog of medium size. These dogs stand about 15-18 inches at the shoulder and weigh 25-45 pounds. Females are typically slightly smaller than males in this breed. The coat of the AWS varies from uniform waves to close curls. The undercoat of this breed provides warmth in cold weather and in the water. Oil in the coat provides additional protection in the water, but may give the AWS a strong odour. The colour of the coat is either solid liver, brown, or dark chocolate. American Water Spaniels are active dogs, and without sufficient exercise, behavioural problems may arise. This breed has somewhat of a tendency to not be sociable with strangers or children, this is not true when properly socialized as a puppy. The AWS tends to be sensitive and slow to mature, a patient and gentle trainer/owner will get the best results.

Although a very rare breed, the American Water Spaniel has its own state-wide fan club as the State Dog of Wisconsin! A truly dual-purpose dog, bred for companionship and top-notch retrieval ability, the AWS is active, muscular and medium in size. This breed’s unique coat can be solid liver, brown or dark chocolate and ranges from marcel (uniform waves) to closely curled.

The American Water Spaniel developed primarily in the Great Lakes region of the United States in the mid 1800’s, with ancestors that include the Irish Water Spaniel and Curly-Coated Retriever. They were the first breed developed in this country as an all-around hunter that could retrieve from boats. Breed enthusiasts kept the AWS out of the show ring for a short time in fear of ruining his reputation as a hunter, but the breed became recognized by the AKC in 1940.

They are also similar in that they are both rare breeds. However, this American breed is officially the state dog of Wisconsin, the state where is originated in the 1800’s. It’s thought to be the end product of crossings of the Irish Water Spaniel, the now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel and the Curly-Coated Retriever and its extinct ancestor, the English Water Spaniel.

The American Water Spaniel is smaller and has different coat texture than the Irish. The American has a smooth face, curly ears and curly double-layered brown coat and a tail shaped like any other setter breed. However, the Irish Water Spaniel, while also having a smooth-haired face, has far more Poodle-like curls. The Irish Water Spaniel also has a naked tail. They are also taller and heavier than an American Water Spaniel. The Irish average 45-65 pounds, while the American only average about 25-45 pounds.

This is a dog that has plenty of energy, especially when younger, and is loyal, dedicated, and fun to be around. The American Water Spaniel is suitable for newcomers to dog ownership as well as for the more experienced, and these dogs are very good around children that they have been brought up with, as well as with other animals. The American Water Spaniel loves to be a part of the action when it comes to family fun and activity, and neglecting your American Water Spaniel can result in boredom and destructive behavior.

The American Water Spaniel is very alert and protective, and this makes him a good watchdog, although it may mean that he is a little reserved and on guard when strangers are around. You should be mindful that the American Water Spaniel does not like to be teased, and can be quite noisy in terms of barking and whining. He can also be possessive when it comes to his toys and his food. However, all in all this is a hardy and robust dog that loves to spend time with his family, enjoys play and exercise, particularly swimming and fetch, and although he can be stubborn can also be very responsive with the right training and attitude. This breed is very adaptable in terms of living environment providing they have the company that they crave, but will fare best in a house with a fenced yard so that they can get plenty of play and exercise.

The Boykin Spaniel is a medium sized breed of dog and a member of the Spaniel family. It is the state dog of South Carolina and its original purpose was to flush and retrieve game.

Slightly larger than the English Cocker Spaniel (about 17 inches (33 cm) high and a weight over 30 pounds (14 kg)) with more feathering, its coat colour comes in liver or chocolate. Traditionally, its tail is docked at the age of three days, leaving 1/3 length. The English Cocker Spaniel is a breed of gun dog. Docking is used as a term for the intentional removal of part of an animals tail or ears.
