A dog that barks when there’s danger is an asset. Watchdogs have their place. But when dogs bark for no reason at all, it can really be a problem for you and your neighbors. If that is the case with your dog, you should really do something about it. Excessive barking is specially annoying when people try to sleep at night. You might have become used to your dog’s barking, but your neighbor might still find it annoying.

bark control collarThere are some methods that you can use to stop your dog from barking so much. Some of these are: finding the underlying cause of the barking, using positive training techniques, or using clicker training to help the dog learn to only bark on command. In some cases, you might even want to consult an expert.

Dog Bark Collars are effective, humane and safe for controlling unwanted barking. Yet in the past few years, the technology of bark collars has advanced to where the goal is not the control of nuisance barking, but teaching the dog not to bark through behavior modification. There are two different types of bark collars: Those that only control and those that control and teach. Do dogs need behavior modification to control nuisance barking? Yes. Unfortunately, a nuisance barker does not make companionship easy for the owner. The barking can disrupt the home as well as the community, sometimes to the point where the dog needs to be removed.

dog bark collarsSome dog bark collars are rechargeable, some are waterproof, etc.   Most of the quality bark collars offered today are offered by either Innotek or PetSafe. The Innotek no bark collars are advanced correction and behavior modification collars. The PetSafe collars are correction only.

Bark collars come in a variety of sizes and strengths to accommodate barking dogs of all statures. Purchase a bark collar that fits comfortably, but tightly, around your dog’s neck. Choose a collar that has either one mild setting or one that has a choice of settings you can manually change. The bark collar will only be as good as the fit on your dog and the appropriate shock.

Place the bark collar around your dog’s neck. It should be close to the dog’s standard collar. Be sure to tighten it. The shock box of the collar should be positioned against your dog’s throat. This will provide a noticeable shock to the dog, teaching the dog to stop barking.

anti barking collarsAn anti-bark collar is sometimes used for dogs whose barking is disruptive or annoying. Excessive barking can disturb owners, neighbors and may even result in dogs needing to be re-homed. Anti-bark collars work by teaching a dog to associate an unpleasant response to their barking. This is called positive punishment, because a physical deterrent is used to correct unwanted behavior. If an anti-bark collar is used incorrectly, and without a comprehensive training plan to alleviate the causes or conditions relating to the undesirable behavior, dogs will not moderate their barking satisfactorily. If an anti-bark collar delivers the deterrent inconsistently, too late or two early, the dog will not associate the correction with its barking and will become confused, frustrated or agitated.

An anti-bark collar is a dog collar with a sound sensor attached. The collar is usually simple web fabric with a plastic locking clasp. The collar is securely fastened around a dog’s neck, with the sensor positioned under the dog’s chin. Sensors are sensitive to either vibration or noise. The sound sensor delivers a correction–spray, tone or shock–in response to the vibration or noise stimulus. Bark collars usually require small batteries. Some are rechargeable. They work best if they are waterproof.

The Citronella anti bark collar is the most effective way to stop dog barking and the kindest. Citronella bark collars aren’t only a lot nicer than shock collars, they work better.

When your dog barks, the collar sprays a mist of citronella scent in front of his nose. Dogs don’t like this. The hissing noise startles them and they dislike the citronella smell. Most dogs figure things out very quickly and stop barking. University studies have shown that citronella anti bark collars are twice as effective as shock collars. We can’t guarantee that the Gentle Spray citronella anti bark collar will work for your dog but nearly all our customers use them successfully.

Electrical stimulation is a major part of how a brain operates. Research I have seen, as well as anecdotal information from trainers and owners, indicates unpredictable behavioral effects can happen with electrical stimulation on a dog. It needs to be done under expert guidance. The citronella collar is said to work for at least as many dogs as the collars that give the dog electrical stimulation. So if you want to take the collar route, the citronella type would be my first choice. As far as physical injury to a dog from an electronic collar, if that occurs, it is probably on a level we are not able to detect.
