Afghan Hound Review

The Afghan Hound is a breed that needs at least two 30-minute blocks of time per day to get out and run in a safe, fenced area. They will run just for the sheer enjoyment of it, with or without companionship. The Afghan Hound is an aristocrat, his whole appearance one of dignity and aloofness with no trace of plainness or coarseness. He has a straight front, proudly carried head, eyes gazing into the distance as if in memory of ages past. True to his mountain heritage, the Afghan Hound is a tough, agile dog capable of climbing rocky outcrops and dodging around and over boulders. His large feet give him great support for twists and turns as he trails large game and dodges the hoofs and teeth of cornered animals.

The Afghan Hound is also considered to be one of the oldest known breeds. The Afghan Hound is tall, standing 24 to 29 inches (63-74 cm) in height and weighing 45 to 60 pounds (20-30 kg). The coat may be any colour, but white markings, particularly on the head, are discouraged; many individuals have a black facial mask. The Afghan Hound is best suited to those with some experience of dog ownership and training, as their stubborn streak can make training quite a challenge. Housebreaking can also be a challenge with this breed. Moving with head and tail high, the whole appearance of the Afghan Hound is one of great style and beauty. Today’s Afghan Hound isn’t hunting leopards but this sighthound does retain the independent nature of a coursing hound. An Afghan puppy will eagerly seek affection from family members, just like puppies of any breed, but this puppyhood behavior can fool unsuspecting owners.

The Afghan Hound is not suited for apartment or enclosed living. It requires regular exercise to maintain its optimum health and fitness. Like other sighthounds, the Afghan Hound is sensitive to anesthesia. Afghan Hounds have litters of 6-8 and a life span of 11-13 years. Appearance: The Afghan Hound is a tall and slender sighthound with noble stature, giving impression of aristocracy among dogs. The coat may be any color, but white markings, particularly on the head, are discouraged; many individuals have a black facial mask. Afghans require weekly baths and brush-outs to prevent that spectacular coat from becoming a sorry, tattered mess. The coat pattern developes naturally. A professional groomer is best but you will still need to brush them daily between visits.

The undercoat of your Afghan Hound will shed in the warmer weather. The long, thick coat demands a very high grooming maintenance and must be brushed regularly. Baths are necessary once a week. In the late 1800s, British soldiers in Afghanistan found the breed and brought it back to England where it was first shown as the “Oriental Greyhound”. This is a difficult mouth to breed. A scissors bite is even more punishing and can be more easily bred into a dog than a level mouth, and a dog having a scissors bite, where the lower teeth slip inside and rest against the teeth of the upper jaw, should not be penalized. This breed needs quite a bit of exercise, so it is not ideal for an apartment. Be sure that you only exercise your dog in a fenced yard or on a lead.
