How to Make Your Puppy Happy

We’ve all heard the stories of putting a ticking clock in the dog bed with the puppy to simulate the beating heart of the mother. And while that trick works well, there are other great tricks that will make your puppy the happiest in your area of town.

First of all, most communication with dogs is with the eyes. You can tell a lot about what the puppy is thinking by following the eyes. When a puppy is happy and wants your attention, they will look into your eyes. Don’t ask me why this is – it is a God given thing, I believe – that all animals attempt to communicate through vision. We are wired that way.

Isn’t that what you want to see in a picture of someone? Even on Fox’s new TV show, “Lie to Me,” it is the eyes that tell all. And so it is with your puppy. He or she will tell you a million words just by the way they look at you.

When dogs are troubled, they start searching for comfort. It’s almost human, no? They will seek the motherly instinct and look for you. When they find you, take a note of how they are holding their body. Are they dancing on their feet, or are they hunched over and looking around the floor. When they are sad, their body follows. It is droopy and sad looking.

To make them happy, you must understand their need. As with kids, dogs and especially at the puppy age, will practically lead you to what they want. And most of the time the only thing you have to do to make them happy is to play with them. They need the exercise, as do you, so make this a time of great contact and bonding with your puppy.

Another thing I want to mention is to not feed your dog too much. This makes them slow and sad. They can’t be blamed. And don’t over water – that is – put too much water out for your dog. They will keep drinking and eliminate right in your home because they can’t wait.

So there you have a few tips for dog and puppy training. It’s not brain science, but perhaps you didn’t know where to look. And with puppies, and almost all animals, it is the eyes. They tell all. Give it a try and tell me what you find.

I find that putting one of my t-shirts in their bed works great because of the smell I guess.
