With their double coat, Akitas handle cold weather well but should always have shelter. With shade and fresh water, they can also tolerate hot weather. Its double coat consists of a thick, furry underlayer and a medium-length, harsh, straight topcoat which may be any shade of cream, brown, red, gray, black, silver, or brindle. A muscular dog with erect ears and tail curved over its back, the Akita has been used in the 20th cent. The dog has a rough, straight outercoat and a soft and woolly undercoat. It comes in a variety of colours including red-fawn, sesame, brindle, and white, and in this breed black facial markings are discouraged.

Avoid allowing the Akita to swim in cold weather as their coat is very hard to completely dry when temperatures are cooler. This glorious coat is shed twice a year, and at those times your house will look like a blizzard site. Judicious and frequent grooming can help to minimize the extent to which you are inundated with hair and the length of time you will have to dig your way out. An Akita Inu’s coat features a weather resistant outer layer that is insulated with a soft undercoat. Colors vary, but Akita Inus bred for show should be pure white, brindle, sesame, or red.

Renowned old families in particular, raised dogs all of the same colour from generation to generation as if they were family crests. These dogs were known by their colour and the owner’s name. In the U.S., however, some breeders still mix the original Japanese type with the heavier American type, which is larger, shorter in fur, and allows more colors. It is a large size in the dog breed. It is strong, powerful, muscular, has well body structure and distinctive looking.
Use a strong, and very thick brush or some other shedding tool that will help rid the dog of the excess hair more quickly. Nose large and black, except in white dogs where flesh coloured nose is acceptable.
