The Aidi is a mountain dog so called to defend the tent and belongings of his masters as well as protecting the stock from the wild animals which could cause damages. Whether the Aidi crossed into Africa from Spain or was carried from Italy (or beyond) by the globe-trotting Phoenicians matters little. Just imagine, Aidi is always there when you are in need of a friend. Isn’t that great? The Aidi is a rare breed of dog which originated in Morocco. Aidi dogs are used primarily as a flock guard, protecting sheep and goats. The Aidi is said to make an outstanding watchdog. The Aidi is recognized as coming from Morocco, probably originating in the Sahara. The dog has never worked as a sheepdog even though the 1963 standard was published under the name Atlas Sheepdog; this was corrected in 1969. The coat of the Aidi is course, thick and weather resistant. Coat colors include black, white, black and white, tawny and pale red.

The Aidi is a breed that has large amounts of energy. In addition to being hunters, they are known for their scent abilities. The Aidi is affectionate and quite attached to humans. With its high energy and demands for plenty of exercise, this dog is not suitable as a passive household pet. Like many of the spaniel breeds, it hunts both feather and fur (and even fish) with equal enthusiasm. Friendly, intelligent, and often willing to please, this dog is also very protective of its owner. It also possesses hunting capabilities and good scenting ability. In its native Morocco it is often paired in hunting with the Sloughi, which chases down prey that the Aidi has located by scent. It is a powerful dog that is also agile, alert, and ready for action. As a sensitive breed, the dog should receive kindly, yet firm training.

Owners of these brave little dogs found that the smallest, which they called “runts”, were the scrappiest of the bunch. These little dogs were prized for their temperament. This Moroccan dog lives in the Atlas Mountains and defends the owner and the property from wild animals. These dogs has never worked as flock guards, so the breed standard introduced in 1963 under the name Atlas Sheepdog, was nullified in 1969. Agile, but cautious, the breed is very attached to its human family and will do well as a companion and watchdog. Although Aidis are said to be very obedient and loyal this is not a breed to be kept inactive. The breed is hard to find in the USA.
