The Akbash Dog is thought to be the Turkish equivalent of other white guardian breeds found in and around the northern Mediterranean Basin. The Akbash Dog has its unique combination of molosser and sighthound qualities. When purchasing an Akbash Dog, it is vital to buy from OFA hip certified stock. The breed has an average life expectancy of 10 to 11 years, and they average 7 to 9 puppies per litter. An Akbash Dog’s established territory belongs to the dog, and it should not be expected to tolerate intrusions from wandering neighborhood dogs. The Akbash dog is a large, beautiful breed. With his pale, almost pure white coat, his size, and his incredible aptitude for shepherding and other working conditions, the Akbash can be a terrific companion for any owner.

It is important to rememember that the USDA studies led to the conclusion that Akbash Dogs did not lose their instinct to protect even after neutering. The average weight for a male Akbash Dog in good condition is 120 pounds; for a female, 90 pounds. With its long-legged and “tucked-up” appearance, the Akbash Dog shows signs of greyhound or gazehound influence. The heavier, blunt muzzled Kangal Dog, while not nearly as exaggerated in proportion as many modern day mastiff breeds, is reminiscent of the early mastiffs with their pendant ears, moderately shortened muzzles, powerful chests, and broad skulls. The owners of both pet and livestock-guarding Akbash Dogs need to establish an “alpha,” or dominant, relationship with their dogs.

Properly socialized and trained, the Akbash Dog is an ideal family pet and home guardian. Akbash Dog breeders can provide you with valuable information on selection of your dogs or puppies as well as how to correctly care for your new companion. An Akbash Dog breeder can help match you to the correct dog or puppy that meets your criteria & needs. Akbash Dogs are not recommended for first time dog owners, or anyone who doesn’t have a lot of time for socializing these dogs. They are ideal for those who need an effective watch/guard dog for livestock, as they will not hesitate to risk their own lives to protect animals in their charge. Known health problems for the Akbash breed include hip dysplasia and OCD. The perfect holiday or special occasion dog gift ideas for the pet, canine, puppy, and breed specific dog lover in your life!

Choose from AKC, UKC, and CKC specific dog breed gifts , just dog gifts , mutt and mixed-breed lover gifts , gifts for dog rescuers , or stylish dog t-shirts . As they’re not active, walks are not needed as much as some other breeds but still should happen on a regular basis. A big garden is a must as that’s where the Akbash will get most of their exercise. There is a double coat with a soft undercoat and coarse, white outer coat that is medium or long in length. Their white, weather resistant, double, short to medium length coats are coarse and non-matting, with very little doggy odor. The Akbash has a massive head and powerful jaws. Nose: Black and self-colored according to coat. Neck: Strong, muscular, and arches at the crest.
