I really wish I had this test when we picked out our miniature schnauzer. Don’t get me wrong, I love that crazy dog – Ginger. She’s so cute and the sweetest creature you could ever meet, but she bounces off the wall when anyone comes to the door!

I know, there are ways to train that out of her, but quite possibly another dog from the litter would have worked better with people tapping on the door. Maybe you have a dog like that, too?

If you’re considering a dog right now, man, this test is going to save you a ton of grief. Well, maybe – I mean, if you could know in advance – have a pretty good idea of how aggressive your new pet is going to be, wouldn’t that be good to know?

And that’s what these Temperament Tests do. They really help with knowing the personality of a particular dog. Just think, you can almost know with certainty how that dog is going to turn out after you do a few tests.

This is something you can take to the pet store, or breeder and perform with the pet you’re considering.

Granted, it isn’t as good as having a professional do it, but it will give you some feedback in order to make a good decision about your dog.

And right now it is absolutely free. You can download it right here.

But I want you to have something even better. It’s a complete video of how the Temperament Test works in the real world. We took our cameras and shot hours of high definition video of an actual Temperament Test with a few puppies.

You’ll hear the professional tell us why they do certain tests and how you get ideas about the personality of the dog simply by their reaction. It is very, very cool, shot on location right here in Naples, Florida.

And it’s yours free, too. Find out more here and be on your way to choosing the very best pick of the litter!

Choosing the right dog for your family has never been easier or more fun. We are the site for you if you need help figuring out what type of breed would work best with your own unique family lifestyle. There is a lot to consider when choosing the right dog for your lifestyle. Depending on your specific living situation, you will have several factors to consider before actually making a choice. Your first responsibility as a prospective new dog guardian is to choose the right dog for your situation. Make the right decision now and you and your dog will enjoy a lifetime of happiness together.

So what’s the right dog for you? Beauty is skin deep, so my tip is to think about a dog’s temperament and energy level. If you or anyone if your house is allergic to pets, a Golden Retriever may not be the right dog for you.

When you’re certain that you’re ready to open your home and your heart to a new canine companion, it’s time to carefully choose a dog with characteristics that match your personal preferences and your lifestyle. Do you want a puppy or an adult dog? The following steps guide you through the process and help ensure that the dog walker you choose will be professional and reliable. The first step in choosing a puppy begins with self-analysis, considering your lifestyle and your expectations of a dog. For the first question, you must be brutally honest.

Maybe you want a really smart dog that you take to obedience classes or agility competitions. Too often people choose a dog solely by the way it looks. This is a big mistake. Another way to find inspiration when choosing a dog name is to know their country of origin. Why not consider French names for a French poodle, or Russian names for a Siberian husky.

Remember that choosing a good dog obedience school will help you both get off on the right foot. Knowing the type of lifestyle that one is living and adapting a dog to suit that lifestyle is a good goal to begin choosing a forever dog. Dont pick the first dog you see, think and choose carefully so that you and your dog will be happy.

If you live in an apartment, don’t choose a Saint Bernard, but you could choose a small lapdog. If you want a family dog and have a yard, a Golden Retriever might be right for you. You can either choose an expandable dog crate or block off a portion of a regular dog crate until your puppy grows. When crated, your dog should have enough room to stand up, turn around, and lie down. Choose your dog wisely!

If you choose a puppy you have options. Pet stores are great but some sell puppies from puppy mills that have not been bred in good conditions. When choosing the right dog breed, here are the things you need to consider: When choosing your dog, take a look at the bigger picture. Try to resist the temptation to go for the cutest, cuddliest, adorable dog you can find.

Often, a good breeder will have a waiting list for puppies. If you aren’t the patient sort, you may be tempted to buy a puppy from a pet store. Other good sources are veterinarians, dog breeders, and pet storeowners who will have been asked similar questions before. By asking around, you can find out which trainers are most highly regarded in your area. It’s best to be guided by the breeder or other sources of expertise, such as a vet, behaviourist or trainer as to whether a male or female is best for you and your lifestyle.

The symptoms of dog flu, also known as canine influenza, include persistent coughing, fever, yellow nasal discharge and sometimes pneumonia. Learn the difference between canine influenza, kennel cough and upper respiratory allergies with helpful information from an experienced veterinarian.

The FDA has granted a conditional license for a vaccine against an influenza virus that affects dogs. This influenza virus does not infect people. Since its discovery in 2004, limited outbreaks have occurred, mostly at dog racing tracks and animal shelters. Some dogs infected with the virus show no symptoms at all. Eighty percent of infections were mild illnesses involving cough and fever. In the most serious cases, infection has led to pneumonia or death.

A new canine influenza has sickened dogs at greyhound racing tracks, boarding kennels, and animal shelters in as many as 11 states, killing some animals, causing respiratory infections in others, and striking fear in the hearts of pet owners nationwide. From January to May 2005, reports of outbreaks of a new, respiratory disease primarily in racing dogs came into the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from Florida, Texas, Arkansas, Arizona, West Virginia, Kansas, Iowa, Colorado, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. Not all of these are confirmed cases of canine influenza. However, since this spring, scientists say they’ve confirmed cases of dog flu in pets in Florida, New York, and Massachusetts, and calls are coming in from veterinarians, shelters, and kennels elsewhere.

First identified in 22 racing greyhounds at a Florida racetrack in January 2004, the dog flu is caused by an influenza A virus known as H3N8, previously seen only in horses. Scientists believe that the virus made this unprecedented jump from horses to dogs by a process called “reassortment,” where two virus strains simultaneously infect one animal and a new, hybrid strain emerges. Since dogs appear to have no resistance to this new hybrid strain, “Nearly all dogs are susceptible,” explains Cynda Crawford, a professor at the University of Florida’s School of Veterinary Medicine and one of the scientists who identified the new virus.

Most dogs recover within two weeks, however, some dogs progress to pneumonia and have died. The mortality rate is around 5%. Compare that to a 2% human mortality rate for the 1918 Spanish flu. Fortunately, a vaccine is in the works and should be available soon at a vet near you.

The New Canine Flu, which has killed so many greyhounds is now in the domestic dog population. There is no treatment and no vaccine. It has jumped species, (by feeding greyhounds raw horse meat, which was infected with horse influenza), (horse influenza is avian flu, which jumped species from birds (avian flu), to horses (horse influenza). The avian flu has now moved to racing greyhounds and domestic dogs and the indications are that there may be a potential problem for humans. It is deadly and it is on the loose. It may just be a matter of time. The CDC is watching the disease.

During 2004-2006 swine influenza virus surveillance, two strains of H3N8 influenza viruses were isolated from pigs in central China. Sequence and phylogenetic analyses of eight gene segments revealed that the two swine isolates were of equine origin and most closely related to European equine H3N8 influenza viruses from the early 1990s. Comparison of hemagglutinin (HA) amino acid sequences showed several important substitutions. One substitution caused the loss of a potential glycosylation site, and two substitutions, located at the cleavage site and adjacent to the receptor-binding pocket, respectively, had been reported previously in canine H3 HAs. This expansion of host range of equine H3N8 influenza viruses with mutations in the HA protein might raise the possibility of transmission of these viruses to humans.

The fact is that many people DO NOT, and unless sufficent laws are introduced and ENFORCED, we will continue to have a situation where dogs roam the streets. Dog roams the town looking for a new owner, and ends up being taken in by a family on vacation, consisting of a shrill mother and a bombastic father (Mrs. The girl breaks his heart by ignoring him once they return to her home in the city. As a responsible dog owner who took on a abandonded dog I am disgusted, Charges should be applied.

All we knew was that her previous owner(s) had moved and did not want to take her with them. After we took her to the vet, we placed her on a food allergy diet which completely healed her red eyes. As the owner it is your responsibility to condition your puppy for future training. Like a child your dog will need positive reinforcement and immediate correction. Attempts were made to contact his owners which did not produce and results. So he is now in foster care and awaiting a new home.

I would go further and say that the prospective pet owner should apply to own the pet, providing details of their suitability as an owner/carer, and their need for the animal. Every were we hunt, we look out for the property owners and treat them like family if they aren’t. We don’t use tracking collars on any of our hunting dogs and we treat them like children. Some 15 from one owner arrived in the last two weeks.

In some cases, older dogs are rejected by their owners, or left behind when an elderly owner must give up their beloved pet and no family members want the dog. Some of these dogs are in poor physical condition as well, and adopting them can be challenging and expensive. The potential owner agrees to pay the adoption fee and understands that this is to help defer rescue costs for veterinary care, transportation, and general supply costs incurred daily by the dog in order for their care. Puppies are on the higher end and older dogs or those with special needs may be on the lower end. However, I do not recommend getting a new dog weather a puppy or an adult as a holiday gift unless you have done your research and you are truly prepared to be a new dog owner. We searched for three months before we adopted our two dogs and it just happened to be before christmas.

If the owner was a drunk then it’s likely he might not have that kind of money, resulting in dog being put to sleep. However, as with every animal, owners must be aware of the commitment they are taking on can be up to 10 years. We have been fostering her for a few months now, after having been abandoned by her previous owners. She was very timid and frightened when we first took her in – we had to make a bed in our greenhouse initially as she wouldn’t come into the house even in the worst of weather.

All responsible dog owners clean up after their pets! As for Listerine, I can only say that we have one life, this is it, it’s not a rehearsal, so make the most of it and try giving instead of taking. The removal of fly-tipping from private land is the owner’s responsibility however; we will provide advice on its removal. Come on dog owners! Are a few hours filled with traffic, confusing crowds, explosioins and high levels of noise really worth the anxiety and possible loss of your pet?

Often small dog breeds are incorrectly characterized as high strung and yappy, and this simply isn’t true if the dog is cared for correctly, given lots of love and attention as well as good socialization and training. Small dogs as a rule may not adjust as well to boisterous children and rambunctious toddlers, but they can do very well with older children and families. Small dog breeds are a very popular choice amonst dog owners all over the world. This is not to say that the larger breeds are not popular as well. Generally, small dog breeds are just ten inches or less high at the shoulder. In most breeds, the male is slightly larger than the female, but the difference is generally small.

These small dog breeds are those of about 10, or less, inches tall (average). They can adapt better to a limited space, be easier to handle and require less space to life.

They have a high motor and a short attention span so be patient when training such breeds but also be firm in your commands and do not let the little guy run the show. If given an inch small dog breeds will take a yard and run for as long as you let them. These highly intelligent breeds pick up a command after only about five or six exposures, they more often respond on the first time you give the command, and they remember commands even if they aren’t practiced often. They also learn commands even when the trainer is inexperienced and makes mistakes. Despite this, the Smooth Fox Terrier is very loyal and intelligent, and it can even be trained for tricks and other useful commands.

A fast learning breed is much easier to train and will know more commands in a shorter period of time. While a slower learning breed requires more patience and time to train.

Because of their short hair, they will do best in a warm climate zone or where they can be kept indoors unless they are of the long-haired variety. Their accessories such as collars and leashes are often bejeweled designer goods, and it is not unusual to see the long haired varieties with their heads full of clips.

Terriers are tough, sturdy, courageous, confident, vocal, and very independent. These dogs were first developed to hunt rodents and other small burrowing animals. Toy Fox Terriers love to make you laugh, and this little dog will act like a puppy well into the golden years. Athletic and fun to train, full of practical jokes and silly antics, Toy Fox Terriers practically burst with terrier fire, intelligence, courage, and self-confidence, all conveniently sized to fit in your purse. Types of dogs referred to as toy dogs may include Spaniels , Pinschers and Terriers that have been bred down in size. Not all toy dogs are lapdogs , although that is an important and ancient type of toy dog .

For example, a terrier is a dog with a high energy level, and is generally not content to just sit on your lap ’til it is much older and mature. It is a wise idea to explore all of the benefits and drawbacks to help decide if a small dog is right for you . Fox terriers can be yappy, so your pet may need to go to obedience school if she annoys the neighbors. This is a healthy and low maintenance dog breed, suitable for the owner who just wants to enjoy having a pet without all the grooming fuss. Though called a terrier, the Boston does not have a typical terrier temperament. They make good watchdogs and are naturally protective.

If you know what your dog likes as far as physical attention and treats you will know what works as far as rewards go. Some dogs prefer edible treats while others enjoy playing with a favorite toy. For example, if you have your dog “sit” but reward her after she’s already stood back up, she’ll think she’s being rewarded for standing up. Notice your dogs attitude when your reward him with praise and a few scratches behind his ears. When you praise your dog after his task you just turned the pressure off.

Eventually he will catch on and realize that he must pay attention to you in order to receive the reward that he wants. As long as he’s not overly ball obsessed he’ll let go if offered a treat – click as his mouth opens and the treat becomes the reward. If he’s so ball obsessed he won’t let go, carry another ball to offer him. He will respond in kind, becoming more exited and alert, perhaps seeking attention or further reward. Now, do the same thing again, only this time, in the exact same enthusiastic tones, say ?Oh No!?.

If you think you think baked chicken is the bee’s knees of food but your dog could care less about it then that particular food is not going to be rewarding to your dog. Most dogs work extremely well for a combination of positive reinforcement and rewards. Keep in mind that not all dogs are motivated by food , so you can use a combination of treats, praise, touch or a favorite toy or game your pet enjoys. Yummy treats and physical affection are both significant rewards that most dogs respond powerfully and reliably to.

Now he knows how to sit, and he gets rewarded for doing it. Not only have you taught your dog to sit, you’ll have him looking forward to more training! There are, in fact, few dogs that do not respond well to positive reinforcement, also known as reward training. But, we had started to use food rewards, which we never did with the old Kohler training methods.

Reward based reinforcement training makes rapid progress and is fun for both teacher and student. These trainers have welcomed the accelerated learning curve, as well as the vitality and initiative to experiment, that comes when animals learn because they want to and not because they have to. What species communicates by simply rewarding, rewarding, rewarding? Dogs don’t do it amongst themselves. Talk to him or reward him for doing the right thing. Often novice trainers don’t pay attention to when their dog until they do something inappropriate.

The name comes from the little ‘clickers’ that you use at the exact time when they do well and then reward (with food normally) to associate the clicker noise with food. It’s using the Pavlov’s dog principle to help your dog learn in a positive way rather than a negative one. It’s rarely a problem for the dogs themselves – in fact, jumping seems to act as a reward in itself. It’s a different kettle of fish for the exasperated owner, who’s forced to deal with a new set of muddy footprints/gouges in their skin and clothes/offended guests/scared children! An animal trainer will usually use the control of food or other rewards desired by the animal to condition to the animal to respond in a desired way. Generally, animals are selected for training to make maximum advantage of their natural attributes, sometimes far in excess of those of humans.

When your dog obeys a command, you must mark the behavior that you’re going to reward so that, when she gets that treat in her mouth, she understands exactly what behavior it was that earned her the reward. Some people use a clicker for this: a small metal sound-making device, which emits a distinct “click” when pressed. Why click before giving a reward? Why not only give the reward? Once your dog can already perform the command reliably, gradually decrease the reward until such time that you are only rewarding him occasionally with a treat or a toy, but with continued praise. Eventually, your dog will soon learn that if he keeps responding correctly, he will be rewarded with your praise and sometimes his favorite treat.

The best dog training technique is a combination of praise and treats. When your dog responds as desired to a command or displays the desired behavior simply reward him or her with a little praise and a treat. I will warn you, however, that anything you want to teach your dog won’t come just with a once-a-week class, even if you have the best dog training school in the world. You have to practice with them, just a little bit, every day.

Occasionally certain dogs may become a tad domineering with children which may manifest in the form of the German Shepherd trying to herd them about; in keeping with its breeding pedigree. German Shepherd dogs have excellent watchdog ability and are typically wary of both strangers and other dogs. Schutzhund, the German translates into -protection dog- but that was not the intention of the creation of the sport. Schutzhund was created as a temperament test for German Shepherds by the man responsible for creating the breed, Max von Stephenhaus. I’ve read every German Shepherd Dog book and magazine on the planet and I can tell you that nothing can teach you how to train your dog better than a trained professional.

A good training treat for puppies or full grown dogs is one that is soft and can be eaten very quickly typically in one gulp. In fact the smaller it is the better. With young puppies the old theory was to keep them in the house until they were 6 months old. Read about some new puppy socialization ideas that are safe for your young new puppy. A group of puppies will jump, run, tug, and have a great time together. Playing with your dog is a great way to exercise and bond with your dog.

Puppies will usually go to any lengths not to soil their immediate quarters. When crate training a puppy it is best to begin when you are at home and can be near him, this way he will fell more secure when you are away – before crating the pup make sure you have given him the opportunity to go to the bathroom (especially if you have just fed and watered him). A puppy class is excellent for socialization since all shot records will be checked before the puppies will meet. These are safe ways to get your puppy out while minimizing his exposure to harmful viruses and germs. Our all-natural methods are effective with any dog, any age – including puppies.

If owners allow their pups sufficient opportunities to play with other puppies and dogs, most potential dog-dog problems take care of themselves. The pups virtually train themselves to be friendly and outgoing. It is a time when young puppies learn what is safe (and what is not). Early socialization is the key to your puppy’s well being. Find puppies or dogs available for adoption from one of the many Dog Rescue Organizations around the country. Features mixed breed and purebreed rescue groups.

Why do some of us love the size, looks and temperament of a Great Dane and others would never own anything but a Toy Poodle? Every breed has their pros. That’s what trainers primarily do, help create consistent associations between a desired action and a command, or signal. It’s a great way to bring the family together or give a child a great sense of accomplishment.

We’ve all heard the stories of putting a ticking clock in the dog bed with the puppy to simulate the beating heart of the mother. And while that trick works well, there are other great tricks that will make your puppy the happiest in your area of town.

First of all, most communication with dogs is with the eyes. You can tell a lot about what the puppy is thinking by following the eyes. When a puppy is happy and wants your attention, they will look into your eyes. Don’t ask me why this is – it is a God given thing, I believe – that all animals attempt to communicate through vision. We are wired that way.

Isn’t that what you want to see in a picture of someone? Even on Fox’s new TV show, “Lie to Me,” it is the eyes that tell all. And so it is with your puppy. He or she will tell you a million words just by the way they look at you.

When dogs are troubled, they start searching for comfort. It’s almost human, no? They will seek the motherly instinct and look for you. When they find you, take a note of how they are holding their body. Are they dancing on their feet, or are they hunched over and looking around the floor. When they are sad, their body follows. It is droopy and sad looking.

To make them happy, you must understand their need. As with kids, dogs and especially at the puppy age, will practically lead you to what they want. And most of the time the only thing you have to do to make them happy is to play with them. They need the exercise, as do you, so make this a time of great contact and bonding with your puppy.

Another thing I want to mention is to not feed your dog too much. This makes them slow and sad. They can’t be blamed. And don’t over water – that is – put too much water out for your dog. They will keep drinking and eliminate right in your home because they can’t wait.

So there you have a few tips for dog and puppy training. It’s not brain science, but perhaps you didn’t know where to look. And with puppies, and almost all animals, it is the eyes. They tell all. Give it a try and tell me what you find.

Once they’re on your dog, it’s easy for them to spread to your carpets and bedding, where they’ll continue to grow and multiply. That’s why flea control is so important. Feeding pet’s garlic, brewer’s yeast or B vitamins has not been shown to be effective against fleas. Also, pennyroyal, eucalyptus, rosemary, tea leaves and citronella have not been shown to provide effective control. Remember that the flea spends the majority of its life in the environment, not on your pet, so it may be difficult to find. In fact, your dog may continue to scratch without you ever seeing a flea on him. You have to carefully follow the manufacturers instructions when applying flea dips and ensure none of the product splashes into your dog’s eyes and ears. Do not use other products at the same time.

Make sure any product you use does not contain piperonyl butoxide. Also make sure that the solution contains no more than .04% active Pyrethrins. Find products that are harmless to pets, people and environment while effectively knocking down those pests. Counterfeit Advantage Flea Control for Dog products are sometimes sold through other retailers, putting your pets at risk. Egg production can continue for as long as 100 days, which means that a single flea can produce thousands of eggs. Lufenuron is given monthly, and is combined with heartworm protection in the product Sentinel. Methoprene and pyriproxifen (Nylar) are also very effective IGRs that are available as sprays or collars. This page has some useful tips for what you should do to control fleas that are an inevitable byproduct of going out to get some exercise.

Basically, these products stop the normal action of neuro-transmitters, causing the insects to lose control of bodily functions, go into convulsions, dehydrate and ultimately die. Guess what happens when pets come in contact with such sprays and either ingest or inhale them? This type is by far the most popular because it prevents both fleas and ticks — and sometimes other pests — and is safe and easy to use.

Due to the common misconception that fleas die off in the Winter, many pet owners skip flea prevention treatments when it gets colder. Fleas can withstand normal Winter conditions, however they will not survive harsh conditions (roughly 10 days at 37F or 5 days at 33F). Advantage then spreads naturally on the surface of the pet’s skin, with the help of movement by your cat or dog. As a matter of fact, FRONTLINE flea control is approved for use on young puppies and kittens so you can provide your pet with the best flea protection, right from the start.

If left untreated it can lead to complications in not only your pet’s health but also in your health too. Your pet can swim, get wet and even be bathed without the need for re-application. What’s more, FRONTLINE flea control is approved for use on very young puppies, so you can provide your pet with the best flea and tick protection, right from the start. They bounce around on the furniture and carpet in search of pets to nibble on. What really stinks is that they can even go after you if they can’t find any animals.

Also, fleas can bite other pets and humans in the household leading to infestations, possible allergic reactions and even allergies and skin rashes. Dog fleas are found almost everywhere in the world, although they tend to be more problematic in warm climates and in more southerly locations. As they mature into adults, they jump onto your pet. It’s a constant process. Can be sprayed on carpets, upholstery, bedding and anywhere pets frequent. It can even be sprayed on dogs over six months old once every 30 days.

One of the most common options that people go with to provide their pooch with that place is dog kennel or dog crate. One can be made from all sorts of materials, like plastic or metal, and they are available in many different sizes.
Baffled poly-fil is a good choice, interlocking poly filled tubes will provide a uniform sleep area. Some beds are filled with cedar which may repel fleas. We are just as passionate about providing your pet with specialty items as you are. You don’t just want the items to look good; you want them to hold up over time and that is why you want the best quality products. It might sound a fancy idea but waterbeds do not provide the right skeletal support for your dogs. Unlike human beings our pets have a different sense of luxury.

Donut dog beds are extremely plush and some of the most cuddly dogs beds available. Dog beds should be built to last; the classic Orvis Dog’s Nest is 100% guaranteed. Available in extra large for large breeds or homes with multiple dogs. Chew proof dog beds are also available. There are many dog bed designs that allow air flow beneath the sleeping dog and resemble a small cot. Take a look at designer specialty dog beds from Bowsers, a leader in quality dog beds + pet beds. And look at the Heated Dog Beds -- UL and CUL certified, they are considered to be the safest dog bed on the market today.

For older dogs and dogs recovering from injury there is a complete line of orthopedic dog beds. During the summer months nothing keeps your dog cooler than a cooling dog bed. Browse a huge selection of dog beds, orthopedic dog beds, heated dog beds, crate pads and dog crate pillows. You should have no problem finding the perfect dog bed for your mini, small, medium or large dogs. Orthopedic beds insulate older pets from cold floors and support their weight with medical-grade poly foam, which reduces strain and pressure on their joints. An orthopedic pet bed is the best choice for dogs suffering from hip dysplasia or arthritis.

Not every orthopedic dog bed takes this expensive step. If Buddy Beds just used memory foam alone, the longer your dog is resting or sleeping on the dog bed — the deeper he/she would sink into the memory foam-- until ultimately hitting the floor creating a pressure point and defeating the whole purpose of the memory foam. If your dog is older there are wonderful orthopedic dog beds and dog sofas. To accessorize, look for the right piece of dog furniture -- from dog feeders, toy boxes, blankets, mirrors, personalized dog bowls, leash racks & more.
