Because they’re so tiny and have such splendid coats, many people think Yorkshire Terriers are delicate dogs. Actually, it’s better not to baby these dogs too much. Yorkshire Terriers are a very social type of dogs. They possess the ability to mix up with other household animals like cats and dogs quite comfortably, especially when they are brought up with them. Yorkshire Terriers are quick to determine where they fit in a household’s “pack”. Their behavior towards outsiders will vary -- they often will be inclined to bark at strangers, but some Yorkies are outgoing and friendly towards new people while others are withdrawn and aloof. Some lines of Yorkshire Terriers are prone to bronchitis and early tooth decay. They are sometimes unable to tolerate anesthetic treatment, and occasionally, their digestive systems are very delicate. Puppy Yorkshire Terriers are born black and tan and gradually attain their natural color. Show dogs are groomed with the hair grown out long (sometimes trimmed to floor-length) and parted down the middle of the back.

The original Yorkshire Terrier, known as the “Broken-Haired Scotch Terrier” was a 12-to-14 pound dog with wire hair whose intended purpose was the catching of rats and other vermin that lived in small spaces. They are recommended for older, considerate children, simply because they are so small, most people allow them to get away with behaviors no dog should display . This changes the dogs temperament, as the dog starts to take over the house. Yorkshire Terriers enjoy barking and investigating sounds, making them excellent watchdogs.  I know this probably gets on some peoples’ nerves -- but it’s something you live to learn with.  A Yorkie is simply doing his thing and it’s a natural reaction to his environment.

Dogs of this breed should be compact with square proportions and a perfectly straight top line. They should stand on solid, straight legs, and the head should be carried high. Additionally, since Yorkies carry less dander on their coat, they generally do not have the unpleasant “wet dog” odor when wet, and they may not affect as many people who suffer from dog-related allergies.
