The muzzle is black. The brisket is deep, and the limbs are well muscled. The skin around their neck and mouth is loose.

A nomadic pastoral people in the ancient world, speaking an Iranian language and occupying steppe land to the northeast of the Black Sea. The Alani migrated into the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire and were mentioned in Latin literature in the 1st century.

They are used as fighting dogs in Pakistan and are excellent guard dogs. This is a tall breed with a noble carriage and short coat. The Tosa also interestingly bears many facial similarites with the Rhodesian Ridgeback among other dogs.

The task of the fighting dog demanded specific basic anatomical traits and temperamental features. The goal is to breed a dog that will attack animals but is docile and affectionate toward humans. Generally, dog breeds are categorized according to the functional type, from which the breed was developed. The basic types of dog breeds are -- companion breeds (Lap dogs, designer dogs, German Spitz), hunting dogs (gun dogs, setters, retrievers, hounds, bird dogs, dachshund, terriers, etc), sled dogs (spitz, Eurohound, Eskimo dogs, etc), guard dogs (bulldogs, molossers, schnauzers, fighting dogs, bandogs, pinschers, etc) and pastoral dogs (collies, welsh corgis, etc).

With time most people forgot the breeds and the Indian Mastiff became rare. The people who used the Indian Mastiffs to fight dropped its height a couple of inches for performance sake. Indian Mastiffs are not recommended for first time dog owners or timid dog owners. With their size and great strength, it is best that the owner is experienced in the type of training that these dogs require.

Who wouldn’t want one of these lovable dogs? The Alangu Mastiff is big, but what Mastiff isn’t? Crazy lovable, too!

Autonomous republic in the south of the Russian Federation, on the border with Georgia; area 8,000 sq km/3,088 sq mi; population (1992) 695,000. A new constitution was adopted in 1994 and the republic took its former name of Alania. A part of the Kutch area in Rajasthan was under the Sindh District and so the other name of this breed is Sindh Mastiff. A sudden change in the hunting practises saw the Indian Royal families to use cheetahs for hunting instead.

Whatever you think of the Alangu Mastiff breed, it is a large and rare one that has not caught on as a family pet as much as many of the smaller breeds. The Alangu Mastiff still draws attention in that it is highly prized. The fact that they are rare, just adds to the equation of a collector’s breed that shouldn’t be overlooked.
