I agree entirely that it is up to dog owners to take care of their animals, as should be clear from my previous posts. The fact is that many people DO NOT, and unless sufficent laws are introduced and ENFORCED, we will continue to have a situation where dogs roam the streets. Dog roams the town looking for a new owner, and ends up being taken in by a family on vacation, consisting of a shrill mother and a bombastic father (Mrs. The girl breaks his heart by ignoring him once they return to her home in the city. As a responsible dog owner who took on a abandonded dog I am disgusted, Charges should be applied.

All we knew was that her previous owner(s) had moved and did not want to take her with them. After we took her to the vet, we placed her on a food allergy diet which completely healed her red eyes. As the owner it is your responsibility to condition your puppy for future training. Like a child your dog will need positive reinforcement and immediate correction. Attempts were made to contact his owners which did not produce and results. So he is now in foster care and awaiting a new home.

I would go further and say that the prospective pet owner should apply to own the pet, providing details of their suitability as an owner/carer, and their need for the animal. Every were we hunt, we look out for the property owners and treat them like family if they aren’t. We don’t use tracking collars on any of our hunting dogs and we treat them like children. Some 15 from one owner arrived in the last two weeks.

In some cases, older dogs are rejected by their owners, or left behind when an elderly owner must give up their beloved pet and no family members want the dog. Some of these dogs are in poor physical condition as well, and adopting them can be challenging and expensive. The potential owner agrees to pay the adoption fee and understands that this is to help defer rescue costs for veterinary care, transportation, and general supply costs incurred daily by the dog in order for their care. Puppies are on the higher end and older dogs or those with special needs may be on the lower end. However, I do not recommend getting a new dog weather a puppy or an adult as a holiday gift unless you have done your research and you are truly prepared to be a new dog owner. We searched for three months before we adopted our two dogs and it just happened to be before christmas.

If the owner was a drunk then it’s likely he might not have that kind of money, resulting in dog being put to sleep. However, as with every animal, owners must be aware of the commitment they are taking on can be up to 10 years. We have been fostering her for a few months now, after having been abandoned by her previous owners. She was very timid and frightened when we first took her in – we had to make a bed in our greenhouse initially as she wouldn’t come into the house even in the worst of weather.

All responsible dog owners clean up after their pets! As for Listerine, I can only say that we have one life, this is it, it’s not a rehearsal, so make the most of it and try giving instead of taking. The removal of fly-tipping from private land is the owner’s responsibility however; we will provide advice on its removal. Come on dog owners! Are a few hours filled with traffic, confusing crowds, explosioins and high levels of noise really worth the anxiety and possible loss of your pet?

With their double coat, Akitas handle cold weather well but should always have shelter. With shade and fresh water, they can also tolerate hot weather. Its double coat consists of a thick, furry underlayer and a medium-length, harsh, straight topcoat which may be any shade of cream, brown, red, gray, black, silver, or brindle. A muscular dog with erect ears and tail curved over its back, the Akita has been used in the 20th cent. The dog has a rough, straight outercoat and a soft and woolly undercoat. It comes in a variety of colours including red-fawn, sesame, brindle, and white, and in this breed black facial markings are discouraged.

Avoid allowing the Akita to swim in cold weather as their coat is very hard to completely dry when temperatures are cooler. This glorious coat is shed twice a year, and at those times your house will look like a blizzard site. Judicious and frequent grooming can help to minimize the extent to which you are inundated with hair and the length of time you will have to dig your way out. An Akita Inu’s coat features a weather resistant outer layer that is insulated with a soft undercoat. Colors vary, but Akita Inus bred for show should be pure white, brindle, sesame, or red.

Renowned old families in particular, raised dogs all of the same colour from generation to generation as if they were family crests. These dogs were known by their colour and the owner’s name. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses . Akita is the cutest dog, generally people fall in love with the look of the dog but they tend to forget to investigate and understand the character and temperament of the breed. Please note: A dog that has any of these health problems can sometimes lead a normal life that will bring the owner great satisfaction even though they aren’t perfect. However, some dogs that develop one of these diseases may cost the Owner lots of money to treat the disease or may result in the early death of the Akita. Like most purebred dogs Akitas are bred for perfection. Most Akita puppies range in price anywhere from $750 on the low end up to about $2,000.

In the U.S., however, some breeders still mix the original Japanese type with the heavier American type, which is larger, shorter in fur, and allows more colors. It is a large size in the dog breed. It is strong, powerful, muscular, has well body structure and distinctive looking.
Use a strong, and very thick brush or some other shedding tool that will help rid the dog of the excess hair more quickly. Nose large and black, except in white dogs where flesh coloured nose is acceptable.

If you like your clothes/carpets/furniture to be hair-free, the Alaskan Husky is not the dog for you. Even keeping your husky outside doesn’t eliminate the problem the hair still seems to find its way inside. The life span of the Alaskan Husky is usually between 10 to 15 years. The Alaskan Husky is often misidentified as an official dog breed , though there is technically no ideal physique or genetic profile. The world’s most selective aficionados of Alaskan Huskies—dogsled racers—judge the dogs by very specific criteria, none of which involve appearance or bloodlines: speed, strength and endurance.

The Alaskan Husky is the best racing sled dog in the world today. The Alaskan Husky is derived from a mix of northern types, most notably the Siberian husky. It is not considered to be a wolfdog, although distant wolf ancestry is quite visible in several features of many Alaskan Huskies.

The Alaskan Husky is generally healthy; some are prone to PRA (an eye disorder) or hypothyroidism. The Alaskan Husky has a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. The Alaskan Husky is basically a mixed-breed dog, in which northern or husky-type ancestry, such as the Siberian Husky or the traditional Alaskan village dog, predominates. It falls short of being a breed in that there is no preferred type and no restriction as to ancestry; it is defined only by its purpose, which is that of a highly efficient sled dog. The Alaskan Husky is derived from a mix of northern types, most notably the Siberian Husky. Alaskans are strong working dogs with thousands of years of breeding and history in the north country.

Shaving these dogs messes up their ability to keep a consistent body temperature. While the female dog may go into heat at an early age, she may not be physically ready to carry and care for puppies, so keep this in mind. You need to wait at least until the dog is fully grown before attempting to breed, and for some breeds, that isn’t until the reach two years of age or older. This cheerful dog is very fond of his or her family. A puppy at heart, they are clever, sociable and loving, easy-going and docile.

The coat can be of almost any conceivable dog color. Eyes too can be of any color, though blue is the most common. Gentle in character with a determined look he is a very people oriented dog. Males have a tendency to roam and need to be kept in a fenced in area. They are very strong, fast sprinters which make them extremely efficient sled dogs. They are slightly larger and have more endurance when competing in sled races then the Siberian husky.

Alaskan huskies are very popular as pets in Alaska, where they are relatively easy to obtain from professional dogsled racers. Puppies judged to be unfit for racing are regularly culled, and as a result they are often available free to any good home. Tarter or dental calculus starts off soft but can harden on the dogs teeth. Once hardened, it cannot be brushed away but requires a dental scaling just like you . All dog breeds, like huskys require a certain amount of grooming and care is necessary to keep dogs and puppies looking at their best. Grooming consists of not only brushing out the coat and bathing but also giving attention to the eyes, teeth, ears, feet and nails.

The Alopekis is an intelligent, energetic, multi-purpose utility and companion dog. It is tireless, eager to please, easy to train, and of a pleasant disposition. Also known as the Alopecis, meaning “small and fox-like”, the Alopekis is an intelligent and loyal breed. But how do you know whether you are ready to purchase a pet and if this breed is right for you? The Alopekis is a small dog that is slightly longer than it is tall. Movement should be swift and graceful, and the tail is sickle shaped.

Since this leash is wide and strong it can be used in Schutzhund training as well. You have to hold this leash to believe quality. Strong, healthy, hardy and of moderate needs. Watch-dog, ratter, flock-attendant, possessing a natural hunting instinct. They have long bodies with a wide chest, extended ribcage, and a strong, curved back. Their limbs are straight, short, and well-developed with strong wrists and knees and thickly padded feet.

Australian Silky Terriers are bred as house dogs, so tend to have a strong attachment to their owner and owner’s family, coupled with a slight suspicion of strangers and strange dogs. They are very good watch dogs.

They have always been and continue to be a valued companions to the Greek. A hairless version of this dog became extinct when the climate in Greece began to cool. Due to their small size, people seem to instinctively keep them as companions, some times for generations. This is a tradition that goes all the way back to ancient Greece.

Valued companion of the Greek people from antiquity to this day. At one time occurred naturally in the Greek stray population but are now being carefully bred. These dogs are very versatile and for centuries they have been used in farms as ratters, guardians, pets and companions. The alopekis dog is small puppy and can be viewed on a rare dog picture site. Protective of people and house animals, relentless enemy of vermin, enthusiastic worker, highly trainable, extremely agile, with a hunting instinct and playful disposition, Alopecis is the valued companion of the Greek people from antiquity to this day. Full of courage and always bright-eyed, ever-ready for action, tireless and capable of covering great distances, athletic and with fast reflexes, positive-thinking and resourceful, with great stamina and persistence, adaptable & eager to the needs of the master, full of grace in manners and pleasant in it’s habits, this is an unspoiled breed of dog, useful in many tasks and blessed with centuries-old resilience & canine wisdom, a true “multum in parvo”, feeling equally at home in any environment, urban or rural alike.

However, if they are light yellow, there is a serious problem with the dog’s eyes. These differences largely follow type, because the Small House Dogs of Greece fall into two main categories ,by coat and ear-carriage. The short-haired ones tend to be smaller, more slender and with erect ears. The harness is designed to fit almost any sized working dogs. It’s five way adjustable so you can adjust it to fit to your dogs dimensions.

You’ll find Dachsies are very well socialized pets and will adapt easily to your loving home. Dachshunds and similar breeds tend to look very good in pet clothes such as dresses, vests and skirts. You may also want to consider some sweaters as your choice in dachshunds clothing. They are generally okay with other pets, however, once again, without proper leadership from their humans, they can be jealous, irritable, obstinate and very quick to bite. Sometimes refusing to be handled. So get advice for the care of your pet. As these dogs are rather popular, people often breed their pets and raise the puppies themselves without caring much about the health of the litter and breed standard. The result is increasing pet overpopulation and many dogs that are abandoned. Nose and nails-in the case of black dogs, black; for chocolate and all other colors, dark brown, but self-colored is acceptable. Partial or wholly blue (wall) eyes are as acceptable as dark eyes. A large area of white on the chest of a dapple is permissible. Eyes are oval in shape, medium in size and are dark rimmed. The muzzle is finely formed, the nose is black, and the head tapered.

Wirehair Dachshund breeders can also direct you to other Wirehair Dachshund breeders they know, which might be closer to you. USA Registered Puppies has developed a list of the most popular registered breeds with breed standard images for selecting your puppy. Their eyes are medium sized, dark and almond shaped, with dark rims. Their ears are set near the top of their heads, are rounded and moderately long. Its eyes are oval, dark red or brown-black with an energetic and friendly expression. Its ears are mobile and hanging long on its cheeks. Darker spots that are the color of the “normal” coat may appear on the lighter dapple area. There will be black spots on black and tan Dapples and chocolate spots on the chocolate and tan dogs.

Chihuahuas are already the smallest dog breed in the world and having one means that it will be the smallest of the smallest and they many people think they are the cutest. Major fault: color of nose, lips and eye-rims incomplete, or of wrong color for color of dog. Labradoodles are one of the friendliest dogs you will ever find. An Australian breeder decided to cross a Labrador with a Poodle for a vision-impaired lady who needed a guide dog, but was allergic to the fur. Please be sure to read “FYI” for additional details and review my Contract. Prices, pictures, pedigrees and references can be mailed upon request. The curved tail is dual-purposed: to be seen more easily in long grass and, in the case of burrowing dachshunds, to help haul the dog out if it becomes stuck in a burrow. Most of my dogs will greet strangers with a tail wag instead of a bark. They are all very happy and healthy.

So do Teacup Dachshunds exist? It suggests that the breed comes in different sizes. These little dogs like to bark (their barks are surprisingly loud for their size), and the dog needs to be told barking obsessively is an unwanted behavior. This breed has an instinct to dig. Despite their small size they make a good watch dog with a surprisingly loud bark. Dachshunds may be slightly aggressive to strangers. Wired-haired Miniature Dachshunds tend to be livelier and more outgoing then smooth-hairs. Miniature Dachshunds are more reserved than the standard breed. Miniature Dachshunds are available in smooth-hair, long-hair and wire-hair and come in a large array of colors. We have a limited number of males and several; females several colors. Some of my favorite colors are chocolate and tan and cream. Miniature Dachshunds although placed in the hound group, this is actually a breed of terriers, as they go to the ground in search of vermin.

Want to know about the dog that is taking the hearts of millions at the box office all over the world? The movie Marley & Me with Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston -- a pretty big hit -- featured a Yellow Labrador Retriever. In fact, the movie used 22 Yellow Labs, according to the New York Times. Some places I found said only 18 dogs were used. But whatever the case, if you’ve seen the film and want to know a little about the breed, you’ve come to the right place. Marley & Me used many Labradors because they showed the dog growing up, and because the Lab is a pretty active dog. Their time on camera was limited only because they didn’t want to tire the dog. But Labs are resilient and can do quite a lot before they lose interest. If you’re considering getting a Marley for yourself, here are some tips.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uP4mUXlPmM

A loving and caring dog, the Yellow Labrador is just like the breed; full of life and with a hunger for playfulness. If you watched Marley in the movie, you know you’re in for a lot of zaniness. Labs grow to be big dogs and need space. These are not the type of dogs for apartments or small condos. These guys need their exercise and room to call their own. They also have a great appetite, so plan on spending for dog food. I can’t stress anything more than the fact that you need to match your dog to your lifestyle and your lifestyle to your dog. What this means is that Yellow Labradors need a good amount of activity. They need to be exercised daily. If you’re the type that works all day and then comes home and spends hours on the computer, this isn’t the dog for you. Yellow Labradors won’t thrive in a condition where they are sedentary. Like humans, they’ll get overweight and lose important muscle tone if left to lay around all day.

Remember that these dogs were carefully bred for gun dog work on estates. Yellow Labs are bred to instinctively point. You probably won’t take your Labrador out hunting, but if you do, they know exactly what to do. Yellow Labradors are often taller and skinnier with a thin, lanky head, bred to look and move more like a setter. The average price for a properly bred Labrador puppy is about 800-1200 dollars, more for a show- or field trial- quality puppy. If you are asked to pay substantially more or less for a puppy without good reason given, be wary. You really need to check out what you’re looking for and what you’re getting. The worse case is you buy something you can’t get out of and then find out that you’re not happy with your Labrador. It does happen, and that’s how some of these beautiful dogs wind up in shelters.

Taking your dog along to the beach, or park is one of the most fun things you can do. Like the video above, where the Labs are all jumping in the pond, Yellow Labradors love to play and need the exercise. I guess I’ve made the point enough -- don’t get one of these pups if you can’t get outdoors and play with them -- a lot. And one other thing, besides exercise, and feeding -- Frequent brushing or combing can reduce the need for frequent dusting and vacuuming to pick up shed hair. Your yellow Lab’s coat should be brushed at least weekly. Ask your veterinarian or pet store personnel what type of brush is best. Whether they are shedding or not, proper brushing 2-3 times a week is required for them to remove the dead hair & skin if any. Some veterinery lotions & conditioners are also available in the market by which they can be softly washed 2-3 times a week.

So there you have it. The basics on Yellow Lab -- Marley type dog ownership. Yes, they start out as cute, furry, little pups and then grow quickly into a handful. But they’re full of love and I tell you, the Yellow Labrador is one of the most loyal pets in the world. Where else can you find someone who will greet you each time you enter the house, won’t bug you about problems, doesn’t want to marry you or date you, doesn’t ask for money, just wants to be with you and shower you with attention? That’s a Lab, and well, they’re like most other dogs. Full of love -- that’s why we feature them here on Three Best Dogs. Marley & Me is a good demonstration of the breed, but remember it’s just a movie. Do you have any questions? We’d love to hear your thoughts on the Yellow Labrador.

Since, when they were bred, they have lived near horses and have been trained to track down foxes during the hunting. Over the years, they have been used for the fox-hunting purpose. Their height can vary from twenty-one inches to a maximum of twenty-five inches. Their weight varies from sixty-five pounds to a maximum of seventy-five pounds. They have lovely and gentle looking eyes. Their paws are round and look like those of the cat.

The American foxhound is a breed of dog that is actually the cousin of the English Foxhound. This is, of course, a scent hound, and it was used to hunt foxes by scent. This is a very sweet dog, and lot of people love them. However, the American foxhound is a dog that is very stubborn once it picks up a trail of some kind. Once this happens, you can forget about the American foxhound listing to any of the commands you give it.

This is a dog that would rather deal with the aftermath of not listening to you than to give up a scent. This is a trait that you can find even in the American Foxhound puppies for sale. This is a dog that is so loving at home, however, a lot of people have stopped using these dogs for hunting. Of course, this brings up another problem that people have with these dogs.

As we said before, the American foxhound loves to hunt. However, people like to make them home dogs. Well, the American foxhound is one of the smartest foxhounds alive. They can very easily learn to open gates and to scale fences to go hunting. This can become a problem. Once they pick up a scent you can not stop it until it gets its prey. To keep the American foxhound happy, you need to let it outside a lot. Sometimes it helps to have a dog radio fence around the fence that you put up for them. That way they do not try and jump the fence or open the gate. If you can put a dog door in one of your back doors so this dog can get in and out when it wants to, you will save yourself a lot of trouble.

If not, you will find yourself letting this dog in and out over and over again. If you choose not to let it out, then you may find that they use the bathroom inside. Then you only have yourself to blame. After all, they told you that they had to go outside. It’s good to let this dog out anyway. That is because they get so bored so fast. They can do things like tear up objects and are so tall that they can take things right off your counter tops. They do this not to be mean, but because they are bored.

Originally trained to hunt with the pack, they pull on well and enjoy other dogs company. They are outgoing, gentle and very tolerant breed and mix well with children, humans, horses plus other pets. You may not see many American Foxhounds in dog shows across the country but you will see a few. The dogs you see at the shows are normally larger than the regular American Foxhound you will see out chasing game.

There are a variety of strains of the American Foxhound around today, which include the Goodman, July, Trigg, Penn-Marydel, and the Walker. All the breeds look very different, but are considered to be members of the same breed. The majority of show dogs are Walkers while the hunting dogs are usually Penn-Marydel or any of the strains to the preference of the hunter.

The Anatolian Shepherd Dog originates in Turkey where it is known as ‘Coban Kopegi’ meaning Shepherds Dog. It is a flock protector, not a herding dog of ancient origin. Similar dogs are depicted in Assyrian artwork from more than 4000 years ago. It is one of the true working dogs found in the world today. The conditions which it has to work can be extreme and through necessity they have become very adaptable.

Their temperament should be calm, gentle, sensitive and observant. They have a natural guarding instinct and require correct socialisation. It is a large, powerful and agile dog, capable of great speed when required. Colours vary from white to fawn, including tri-colours, and more rarely brindles. Various coat lengths are exhibited, and short and rough coats can be found in the same litter.

The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a courageous, powerful, and sturdy animal, and can be very calm and dignified yet will not hesitate to respond if challenged. Possessive and very independent, these are not the most obedient of dogs and are very strong minded and willful, which means that they are difficult to train and best suited to those with more experience with dog ownership. This is a dog that likes to make up his own mind everything, and rather than being an interactive, playful dog he likes to play more of a supervisory and protective role. Anyone that plans to have an Anatolian Shepherd Dog needs to be assertive and experienced in training, as otherwise you will end up with a handful – a dog that will quickly take over as boss and is highly dominant and willful.

This breed will get along well with children that are older and more considerate, and those from his own family, but when it comes to other children proper introduction will be required. He will usually get on okay with family pets that are passive and not challenging or aggressive. These dogs are very protective, and therefore may be very suspicious around strangers unless properly introduced. This is a breed that was bred to work and knows that he has a job to do, and unless properly socialized and well managed will quickly take over the role of leader.

The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a remarkable shepherd’s guard dog of ancient lineage. It is a large, formidable working dog with a self-sufficient temperament. Such dogs are found throughout the Anatolian Plateau of Turkey.

Historically since Babylonian times there was a breed of large, strong dogs. They were variously employed as war dogs and for hunting big game such as lions and horses. Some spectacular examples can be seen on the very well preserved relieves in the Assyrian Rooms of the British Museum, London.

A large, tall (28–32 in) dog with a short, dense coat, broad head, and long tail carried over the back. It is usually fawn with a black mask, but other colors also occur. A Turkish breed used for guarding sheep, goats and other livestock.

This guard dog was developed by shepherds to protect their flocks of sheep from wolves. An ancient breed, depicted in ancient Babylonian sculptures, they have come down through the centuries relatively unchanged. Strict selection for working qualities, type and strength has ensured that the breed is immensely tough and has great stamina. A large numbers of Anatolian Shepherds are still used to guard the flocks in Turkey today. A club was set up in the US in 1970 to promote the interests of the breed. This coincided with an upsurgence in the coyote population in the American West and a movement to use guardian dogs for predator control instead of poison and other methods that had not been effective. The dogs have proven to be cost effective and a more humane way to control predators than indiscriminate poisoning.

Appearance: Head: Large, but in proportion to the body. Eyes: Medium in size and set apart, with black and almond-shaped eye rims. Ears: Triangular in shape, measuring about 4 inches at base and 5 inches in length. Muzzle: Medium size and well proportioned to head. Nose: Black and self-colored according to coat. Bite: Scissor or level. Neck: Powerful, muscular, slightly arched, and of medium length. Chest: Deep with a well sprung ribcage. Body: Back is level and slopes downward at the croup. Legs: Forelegs are long and set straight, with hind legs appearing parallel when viewed from behind. Feet: Strong and compact, with well arched toes and thick pads. Tail: Long and carried low with end curled over. Movement: Good reach, with well balanced movement. Temperament: Energetic, free-spirited, with good movement.

German shepherd dogs are valued all over the world for their courageous qualities and fast instincts in an emergency. German shepherd dogs are so well loved because of their lively and intelligent responses to their owners.

Historically, the German Shepherd has been used as a shepherd dog for cows, goats and sheep and at one time German dogs that were used for shepherding had a variety of appearances and coat textures. The German Shepherd look that we are familiar with today was decided during the late 1800s in Germany at a dog show.

There are several lines of German Shepherd dogs which result in dogs with different appearances and talents. The average German Shepherd has an appearance that is familiar with many people and this look is sometimes easily recognized even in mixed breeds. The German Shepherd gets its signature look from the shape of its muzzle, head and ears plus its lively and intelligent expression is another giveaway. The basic German Shepherd facial expression is noble, intelligent and capable and the dog has a muscular and strong appearance.

A German Shepherd’s body is longer than it is tall and its double coat has a dense outer coat that can range from straight to wavy. The German Shepherd coat may be a variety of colors including white. The American Kennel Club disqualifies white German Shepherds from any competitions related to the club.

German Shepherds are known for being courageous team workers and these dogs have a long history of being shepherd, working and pastoral dogs. The German Shepherd is intelligent and easily trained and can assess and react to situations as a team player. German Shepherds are trained for such missions as detection of a variety of dangerous devices and for rescue operations. German Shepherds can be aggressive and can have a dangerous bite. German Shepherd dogs are used as attack dogs and are part of many police squads worldwide.

This dog must be trained when it is going to be in the home because of its aggressive behavior during its puppy hood. You have to socialize and train your puppy so you can enjoy your owner/pet relationship. You may find it easier to obedience train German Shepherd dogs than it is with some other dog breeds.

When you understand this breed, you will know if German shepherd dogs are the right breed for you. German Shepherd dogs have great things to offer the right owner.

Yorkshire Terriers are intelligent, spirited and alert. Patient training and early socialization will reduce the Yorkshire Terrier’s tendencies towards timidity and nipping. Yorkshire Terriers are quick to determine where they fit in a household’s “pack.” Often aloof and untrusting of strangers, Yorkies are more family-oriented dogs and share this trait with their cousins: the Biewer Yorkie. Some Yorkies however, may be very friendly and outgoing towards strangers, so this does vary. Puppy Yorkshire Terriers are born black and tan and gradually attain their natural color. Show dogs are groomed with the hair grown out long (sometimes trimmed to floor-length) and parted down the middle of the back. Yorkshire Terriers are NOT suited to children, no matter how well-meaning the child. Children cannot help being clumsy, and that a child meant well is little solace to a Yorkshire Terrier who has been accidentally stepped on, sat on, rolled on, squeezed, or dropped onto the patio.

Because they’re so tiny and have such splendid coats, many people think Yorkshire Terriers are delicate dogs. Actually, it’s better not to baby these dogs too much. Yorkshire Terriers are a very social type of dogs. They possess the ability to mix up with other household animals like cats and dogs quite comfortably, especially when they are brought up with them. Yorkshire Terriers are quick to determine where they fit in a household’s “pack”. Their behavior towards outsiders will vary -- they often will be inclined to bark at strangers, but some Yorkies are outgoing and friendly towards new people while others are withdrawn and aloof. Some lines of Yorkshire Terriers are prone to bronchitis and early tooth decay. They are sometimes unable to tolerate anesthetic treatment, and occasionally, their digestive systems are very delicate. Puppy Yorkshire Terriers are born black and tan and gradually attain their natural color. Show dogs are groomed with the hair grown out long (sometimes trimmed to floor-length) and parted down the middle of the back.

The original Yorkshire Terrier, known as the “Broken-Haired Scotch Terrier” was a 12-to-14 pound dog with wire hair whose intended purpose was the catching of rats and other vermin that lived in small spaces. They are recommended for older, considerate children, simply because they are so small, most people allow them to get away with behaviors no dog should display . This changes the dogs temperament, as the dog starts to take over the house. Yorkshire Terriers enjoy barking and investigating sounds, making them excellent watchdogs. I know this probably gets on some peoples’ nerves -- but it’s something you live to learn with. A Yorkie is simply doing his thing and it’s a natural reaction to his environment.

Dogs of this breed should be compact with square proportions and a perfectly straight top line. They should stand on solid, straight legs, and the head should be carried high. Additionally, since Yorkies carry less dander on their coat, they generally do not have the unpleasant “wet dog” odor when wet, and they may not affect as many people who suffer from dog-related allergies.
